I’m reading The World’s Religions by Huston Smith and am currently on the part on Hinduism. What I’ve gathered so far is that Hinduism is about attaining the infinite self within, which is done in part(jnana yoga) by forgoing the ego and identifying with all the lives around us as if they were successive lives that we’ve lived. There are other yogas, but this is the one I identify with most. And having read Free Will by Sam Harris, not having Freewill to me is understood as us not being in conscious knowledge consequently not in control of the thoughts that spring from our minds. That if we fully understand causal relationships between everything, it would be apparent that we are not as in control of our thoughts and therefore will as we seem to feel. This thought was more developed earlier in the afternoon, but the connection between Hinduism and this is that the two ideas seem to consistent with each other. I’m not sure if this is the consensus in the Hinduist community or Freewill community, but it’s what’s come to mind having read the aforementioned works on these topics. In Sam Harris’ words, we are the storm of seemingly random thoughts that spring to mind. And similarly. Hinduism teaches detachment and self-identification with something that is not the self, but rather, the Self. In other words, we are the infiniteness within us that comes from everything around us. This isn’t making much sense to me reading it, but the words carry nuanced meanings after having read Huston’s work. So I guess it’d sound like I’m some deranged hippie lunatic here, but trust me, check out The World’s Religions and Free Will
